American Idol 5 Picks

Finally saw the TOP 24 performances (thank you, Bit Comet!) and here are the 6 contestants who I THINK will be the next American Idol. Of course, we all know it's not just about the singing voice, right? As Simon always says in his trademark British accent, "there's also the personality and likeability factor!" Hehe :)

Chris Daughtry & Katherine McPhee

Taylor Hicks & Paris Bennett

Ace Young & Mandisa

And the rest of the TOP 12 will be...

Elliott Yamin & Lisa Tucker

Kellie Pickler & Will Makar

Ayla Brown & David Radford

Amazing Race Asia

It's Survivor that I want to play and I'm not that eager to join this either. Still, I'm thinking of fixing my passport problem and applying for a driver's license, pronto! Deadline is March 15, fanatics! :)

Snow Bag

Hi guys! That's my good 'ol Jansport bag on Utah snow. I asked Michiko to take a picture of it on snowy ground. Buti pa si Jansport noh, nakatikim na ng snow. Hahahaha! :) Habang ako, nakakulong na rin yata sa Bahay ni Kuya. Hehehe.

Yes, it's still about THE show. If there's one person who needs to be debriefed after the season ends, it should not only be the contestants. It should also be me! Dude, I find it hard to get out of my system what happens inside even after my shift! I don't know. I have some dangerous voyeuristic tendencies I guess, but it's just that you get so involved observing the housemates that you feel like you know them and you're very close friends with them?!? P is for pathetic, I know! :) What's weirder is that even in my sleep or supposedly blank state, I still think of them! AAAAAH!!! :)

One proof is that I only get to be friends with Dulce during that 3-month 2003 My First Romance shoot but when she cried for the first time in the house, I also bawled with her. HECK, NOT ONLY WITH HER! I cry when everyone else inside the house cries! I hate! :) Actually I don't understand why the crying moments always come during my shift. Always during my shift! Lord, I want some babaw moments for a change please!!!! :)

So there you go, my first week inside the house. Seven more weeks to go. Wish me luck! :)

Reality Check

I miss you guys. I've been very busy these past few weeks for the reality show. Actually I still haven't slept since last night's launch since I had a spotting shift right after. It's fine, though. I don't wanna be stressed out. I mean, work is still stressful but not that stressful compared to my past shows or movies (I think) because this time, I don't directly work for the bosses. Of course, it's just day 1 so anything can happen. Had I been not busy, I would have "blogged" to you about work-related drama which includes some hurtful backstabbings, a major booboo, memorable shoots and characters. But everything's a blur now. Probably because what I'm thinking of is just doing my work well. Or that I just want to feel neutral and not channel any negative or highly positive energies.

Hey, aren't you happy we have two celebrity bloggers in the house?!? And their sites were linked to mine way before they joined the show. La lang, coolness! Haha, geeky! :)

Of course, I won't end this entry without posting the pictures of the housemates assigned to me during pre-show. Hehe!

Roxy!

Actually I wasn't assigned to this housemate but I knew her way back then, My First Romance days pa lang. Kaya go Mich the Bitch! :)

I don't have any personal favorites to win but pre-show, I think Bianca, John Parts, Mang Rudy and Budoy will be the Big 4 Housemates.

Speaking of predictions, I predict any among Danielle, Ruth-Marie and Terry to win Survivor Panama: Exile Island! Talagang siningit! Hahaha! :)

Of Passion and Perspiration

As I’m writing this, my housemate Michiko is already in the plane on the way to San Fo. From there, she’ll fly to Utah, the home of Sundance where her film Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros is in competition. I’m very excited for Mich. Really. I know she’s just excited to meet Gael Garcia Bernal and Robert Redford and I join her excitement but I’m also excited to find out if her film will win the top plum. I think it has a very strong chance considering gender-sensitive movies are “in” these days in America. Who would have thought the film would go on to compete in Sundance, noh? I mean, remember this blog entry? When they were still trying to raise funds to have the script produced? Galing, di ba! Hay, I’m really proud of my housemate. Sana makagawa rin ako ng pelikula kahit 1/3 lang ng kagandahan ng Maxie.

***

Last night I watched Magnolia again on DVD and saw the production diaries. La lang. Biglang na-miss ko ang paggawa ng pelikula. I got inspired by P.T. Anderson kasi. He was so passionate with his work and I long to have that kind of passion in filmmaking again. Jaded na kasi ako eh. I lack the inspiration. Besides, I also think I’m mediocre and I’m not self-deprecating or whatever, okay! Haha! I guess that’s the reason why I mostly do mainstream fare or mainstream TV work in my case. I used to believe, and I wrote it somewhere here, that it’s easier to write art films coz you have the freedom to express and create whatever you want but now, I think mainstream work is easier. May formula kasi eh. And if people dismiss your work, you can always make the excuse that you were just following the formula. Or pwede ring gawing scapegoat ang masa audience! Bad! :) Of course, the requirements of work and the politics behind it can make you insane but materialistic as it may sound, you can always take comfort in the fact that you’re earning a lot. Bad, noh? Ugh, I need to find that P.T. Anderson in me again! Problem is, up to now I still have no clue as to what I really want to pursue. I guess that’s why I just hide in the contrived.

If I will not be fired before the premiere date, I will be working as one of the story editors in the upcoming Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition. I love reality TV but after attending the meetings this week, I kind of doubt if this show is my forte. I mean what I like about working for reality television is the fact that you create a story out of the raw footages that you culled. Sort of documentary filmmaking, which I love. But here, we also brainstorm for the tasks, for the VTR profiles, for the gimmicks and everything, and I’m clearly lost. But I just want to make a reality story! I hope I’ll find the wits to contribute something worthy in those fields.

Holiday Conclusion

January 5 - “Torete, All This Time”

It was the second to the last day of my stay in my hometown. My elementary friends and I met again at the beach clubhouse for another “inuman” session. This time the treat was on Honey, our friend who wasn’t able to attend the reunion because she was still in the metro. Only a few came but that didn’t dampen our spirit to enjoy the “tagay”. I didn’t know if my friends noticed but I sometimes didn’t drink during my turn. It’s just that I already got so bloated during the holidays I wanted to be more fit when I visit my high school friends in the other island in two days. Main entertainment of the night was Spice with her sultry videoke performance of 80’s hit “All This Time”

…and a not so “torete” videoke performance of Moonstar 88’s “Torete”. Just bear with the blurry videos. They're taken from my ancient camera phone.

We got the most pleasant surprise by the end of the night when we found out somebody already paid the bill. Turned out Peter, a friend's cousin from the States, secretly tipped the waiter. (Thank you Peter, dawg, my homie! Hahaha!) Since Honey only spent a little, she invited us again for another “inuman” session the following night. Ce’st la vie!

January 6 – “Island In The Sun”

Got a bit emotional during my last day in my hometown. I realized I would definitely miss the laid-back life as I go back to living a hard-knock life in the jungle that is Metro Manila. (Ah! Clichés, I know! Haha!) I was also feeling a bit nervous as I was not sure what awaits me in the big city. That time, the job offer I got during Christmas was still 50-50 since they haven’t followed me up yet. I stayed in the house the whole day to spend some precious time with my family. In the afternoon though, I did my usual round of bicycling around town. Took this not so narcissistic vid of myself singing a Weezer song (and jumbling the lyrics) while riding the kiddy bicycle along the beach. Don’t laugh! I'm really this shameful! :)

January 7 – “Leaving on an Ocean Jet”

Hahaha! Took that video inside Ocean Jet, the fast craft that would take me to my high school island. I decided to pass by there to reunite with my high school friends. Weather was not okay during the voyage and it was definitely a seesaw ride due to the big waves but seeing my high school friends again was worth it. We spent most of the night in the reggae bar owned by my friend Sanda, reminiscing about our shiny happy teenage years.

The band was playing Simply Red’s “Stars” in the background. So first year high school! :)

January 8 – “Fun at Bahura”

Decided to extend my stay for one more day as my high school friends and I decided to go to this new resort named Bahura. Had fun swimming in the pool with Marita and Renair, or in my case, just dipping as I don’t know how to swim.

January 9 – “Manila, Manila”

Had an early lunch with high school classmates Sanda and Linlei in the former’s seafood resto before going to the airport to finally kiss vacation goodbye. Hay!

Work starts tomorrow for me. Wish me luck!

And yeah, I am fully aware singing while taking the camera vids is corny and embarrassing. Haha! :)

Get-Togethers and Wish List

We had our annual elementary batch reunion last 27th. We started this tradition in 2003 and have been holding get-togethers every Christmas holidays hence. This was also one of the reasons why I looked forward to coming home this December since the reunions the past years had always been a blast. Take it to my elementary schoolmates who despite having different stories to tell, decide to forget their woes the reunion evening to party hard till dawn. This year was no different, only wilder. We rented a floating restaurant on the beachfront (the beach is just a walking distance in our town which I realized is “heaven” after I studied in the metro) for just 1,000 pesos, would you believe?! Of course the food, drinks and sound equipment are on us. Party began a bit mellow with us just singing videoke and exchanging how do you do’s but when my classmate Carl played his bootlegged copy of Junior Kilat’s breakthrough CD, that’s when the party really started. Suddenly everyone just got up and danced wildly on the floor. And the heavens agreed! There was a sudden heavy downpour with thunders and lightning, mind you, which is really funny since “kilat” is lightning in the vernacular. :) We didn’t mind it though. Maybe it was the result of the alcohol or the food binge but we remained dancing, some even going outside our cover to dance in the rain. It was party heaven! I never realized my elementary friends could party like that. Man, Junior Kilat is good! For NU107 listeners, they may be alternative reggae gods but for us Visayans, they’re novelty dance gurus who know how to start a party! I got to have their album! :)

The following day, former classmate Arvin made paksiw from the leftover lechon and we went to the beach again to continue the drinking session. :)

Here are some pics, the wholesome ones at least, since most of the pics were of the adult nature. Needless to say, there was also some partial nudity involved when everyone undressed after getting soaked in the rain. :)

I decided to copy Saffron Blue and write my own wish list for 2006. However, they are really wishes in the truest sense of the word since I doubt if I’m ever going to attain them in 2006. They’re also purely selfish. Hahaha! Hindi naman kasalanan ang mangarap, di ba?!? :)

1. A DVR
2. A car
3. A new but affordable apartment for Michiko, Rose and I
4. A Bora vacation
5. A trip outside the country but should not be an Asian country
6. A lovelife!

Some wishful thinking, huh?! Hahaha! :) Seriously, I wish nothing but good health and continued blessings to my family and me. 2005 has been soooo good to me! It’s the best year since I started working and I’m so grateful to God for everything. I don’t want to leave 2005! Really.:( Hay. I just hope 2006 will be equally good.

Have a safe and happy New Year, you all!

Topsy Turvy Holidays

My actual birthday started out real bad. I arrived at the airport mere ten minutes before my flight is about to depart. I had to beg for the supervisor to let me in. After some good acting, she finally said yes only to find out that I didn’t have enough money for the excess baggage and terminal fees. (Damn the cab driver who asked for an extra 100!) But Christmas indeed brings out the good in everyone, no matter how superficial the feeling may be. A nice lady gave me a hundred bucks after she heard me plead to the counter to let me withdraw from an ATM machine. (Nice lady, whoever you are, bless you!) I’ve never felt so happy when I was able to finally seat inside the airplane.

Arrived home and found out that my uncle from Zamboanga City and his family are in town and my family’s preparing a birthday party for me. Awwww! I immediately text messaged my elementary school friends to come and join the pahtay. After which, my friends toured me to my hometown’s newest gimmick venue. We also talked about plans for our annual reunion. Since I was dead tired that day, I excused myself early so I can rest. Alas, I realized that we only have 3 bedrooms in our small bungalow and since we have relatives who are staying in for a few days, my sister and I had to sleep with our parents in their bedroom. It’s okay though. Before I left home for high school, our family used to sleep together in one bedroom and sleeping together again made me reminisce the good ‘ol days I guess. Felt a bit emotional in there.

Lechon na naman, yebah!

The following day, I got a text message from my former boss offering me to write for their TV show. This was the 4th time that they made the offer so it was a difficult decision to make. I mean, I do enjoy working in their company and they seem to believe in me, which is a very, VERY big thing! (Of course, I also worked VERY hard to earn their trust.) The problem was I already made a commitment to my filmmaker friend to be her assistant director in her indie movie. The indie movie’s shooting sked is in conflict with the sked of the airing of the TV show. I honestly didn’t know what to do so I just told my filmmaker friend about my dilemma. Hay, I’m so blessed to have good friends! My filmmaker friend told me that it’s okay if I choose the TV show. She understood my plight since she also worked for my former boss before. I really thought for a sec that I would have a “my friendship or your career” soap opera conflict! Haha! :)

I’m nervous thinking about working for the TV show. What if I wouldn’t live up to their expectations?!? The anticipation is stressing me out. I’m aware that a text message like “kailangan ka namin” could be written simply to persuade me to accept the job, no more no less, but it’s pressuring me! Good Lord, HELP!

Even with this upcoming TV project, I still hope I can get to work with my filmmaker friend in the future though. I want to do indie production work. I still dream of someday making my own film.

Forgot the tension-filled afternoon by nighttime when I got a call from my workmate Katski. She greeted me a belated happy birthday and told me that she wanted me to talk to someone. I really had no idea who that’s why I got the surprise of the year when I found out it’s the Yael Yuson of Sponge Cola on the other line greeting me a happy birthday. Or telling me a joke about him being called the Sponge Boy. Or something like that. I actually couldn’t hear him well since I was constantly muttering some silent curses. Shet, ganun pala yung feeling pag nasa Oprah! HAHA! I obviously don’t like to be surprised but it was a pleasant surprise. That was a sweet gesture of Katski. I mean, I wouldn’t think she remembers me being a fan of the band. (She’s friends with Yael coz they’re both from Tanghalang Ateneo, I think.) I heart Katski!

Check out the new song on the radio, Pinwheel's Masayang Kalungkutan. It will definitely be in my list of favorite songs for 2005. Hope you like it! :)

Merry Christmas, everybody! Happy New Year too! :)
